How To Get Started Teaching Guitar - 5 Things You Need To Know And Do

If you want to teach guitar, then it’s critically important to know what the most important steps are to becoming the best teacher you can be. Many people who have been teaching guitar for a long time don’t know all 5 of the important things you are now going to learn about how to teaching guitar.

Like most people, when I started teaching guitar I also didn’t know much about how to teach well. I thought, because I was a good guitar player, that I would be able to teach well. That was false. In my first 10 years of teaching I had taught thousands of guitar lessons and thought I was really good. Fact is, like most guitar teachers, I was only mediocre. Over the next 10 years of my teaching, I finally began to learn the most effective ways to consistently help guitar students progress to very high skill levels in shorter periods of time.

Here are 5 things you should know and do when getting started teaching guitar.

1. The first (and most important) step in learning to teach guitar is to 'care' more about guitar students than any other guitar teacher in your area will. This alone makes a huge difference in the results that your students will get from you compared to what they could get from anyone else.

2. Great guitar teachers do not teach guitar... They teach 'people'. What is the difference? If you teach 'guitar', your approach is to think about the technical, musical and philosophical ways of showing someone how to play a guitar. Fact is, your students don't want to learn to play guitar. They want to learn 'how to feel' a certain way when they pick up a guitar and play (or try to play). They not only want to learn how to get these feelings in the future when they can play well, they want to also feel it right now. They want to love the way it 'feels' to enjoy the process of learning. When you really focus on that, then you begin to realize you are not teaching guitar, you are teaching people.

Teaching 'guitar' is more about explaining or demonstrating various aspects of guitar playing, music theory, etc. Teaching 'people' is all about 'solving problems', developing a specific strategic path to the specific goals they have, supporting them and keeping them motivated in the process of their development.

3. Surround yourself with other EXPERT guitar teachers. There are 2 common mistakes most guitar teachers make. Either they don't surround themselves with other guitar teachers at all, or 2. they surround themselves with other guitar teachers who are not true expert teachers who get big results for their students and have very successful guitar teaching businesses. Surround yourself with experienced expert guitar teachers who know how to 'successfully' handle the same situations that you might be struggling with.

4. Learn to balance patience and expectations. Everyone knows that to be a good guitar teacher one must have a lot of patience. What most don't know is how to balance patience with expectations. Your students' learning progress is heavily influenced not only by what you teach them, but on what you expect from them. If you fail to consistently communicate higher expectations for your students, most of them will progress slowly. You need to push them a little with realistic, but high expectations while at the same time being supportive and patient.

5. Don't settle for being 'good enough'... Sadly, many guitar teachers think it is 'ok' to be 'good enough'. Do you want your doctor, accountant, or your auto mechanic to be 'good enough'? Or do you want these people to be the best they can be in order to serve you better? It's unethical to not be as good as you know you can be. I'm not suggesting that you need to have an advanced music degree from a university, nor that you need to be a great guitarist before you can begin teaching guitar. All guitar instructors have to start from 'somewhere', but once you get started teaching, you owe it to your current and future guitar students to constantly be learning how to become a better guitar teacher. Your students expect and deserve this from you... and you deserve it for yourself.

1. Introduction.
Before I can teach you how to play punk you need to know real punk. First off GC is not punk and are going to be scratched out of this entirely. I will use songs from real bands such as The Clash (greatest punk band of all time), Dead Kennedys, Green Day and other real punkers. Second, you need to know why people play punk. Punk is one of the easiest forms of music. But the history and the reasons behind the attitude of punk is what feuls this apocalyptic fire that dwells inside the punk rock tudes of many followers.

2. Kinds Of Punk.
Now that you know why you play punk and who we will look off of I will tell you of the different kinds:

Ska Punk - punk with ska influences, bands such as Operation Ivy, Sublime, and Rancid.

Pop-Punk - the leading type in the '90s punk revival by a band named Green Day and lead to many modern day MTV punkers.

Old-School Punk (real punk) - bands that sparked the underground movement begining in the late '50s to early '60s. All the way to the late '70s. Bands such as the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Ramones.

Skater Punk - bands that emerged from the '80s California punk movement that was associate with skateboarding and surfing. Bands such as Bad Religion and NOFX.

Emo-Punk the lamest and crapiest form of punk. Emo stands for emotional and is pretty much a guy on a microphone crying about a lost love or some other crap.

3. Practice.
For practice you should do things like this (try to make this faster and faster).

Then do this backward and on every string. Practice this for couple of days and then go for chords. To practice more speed use this intro to a Dead Kennedys song "Soup Is Good Food"

4. Chords.
Here are most of the chords that you need for punk rock music. Punk uses mostly the quintessence of rock and roll guitaring chords called power chords. Bands such as NOFX, The Dead Kennedys and such use different variations of guitaring with these power chords to create their music.

6. Palm Muting

Palm muting is used on most punk songs, especially pop and emo. It is pretty easy, It is were you stop the strings from vibrating by muting them with your palm. Here are some examples:

7. Skunking.
Ska is more complicated then the above. Ska has the use of ska type of guitaring. It's like a mixture of punk and Bob Marley. First of all, to play ska you need to know how to barre. Then, you should practice playing barre chords only on the upstroaks, and doing a "rhythmic click" on the downstrokes. First rractice: the "x"'s are the downstrokes that you don't play.

Shaggydog dan Outsiders Jogja.....
Gelar Konser Amal Peduli Orangutan. Selama dua hari ratusan orang berkumpul di Kulonprogo, Yogyakarta demi pelestarian orangutan sambil berdansa bersama Shaggydog.

Andai orangutan di Pusat Penyelamatan Satwa Jogjakarta (PPSJ) bisa berdansa, mereka pasti akan bergabung bersama Shaggydog dalam pertunjukan musik bertajuk Dare to Care tersebut.

Pertunjukan dalam rangka ulang tahun Outsiders Yogya (sebutan bagi fans Superman Is Dead di Yogya) yang kedua ini mengambil tema tersebut sebagai upaya mengajak kaum muda untuk berani peduli pada nasib orangutan.

Pertunjukan berkonsep camping ini berlangsung selama dua hari pada 23-24 Mei lalu dengan mengambil tempat di Pusat Penyelamatan Satwa Jogjakarta (PPSJ). PPSJ sendiri merupakan tempat bagi para orangutan sitaan milik pribadi untuk dirawat dan dipersiapkan sebelum kembali dilepas ke hutan. Nantinya hasil dari konser ini akan disumbangkan bagi operasional PPSJ.

Shaggydog, Suicidal Sinatra, Something Wrong, Morning Horny, dan beberapa band lain membuat tempat liar itu semakin liar lewat sajian musik yang mereka hadirkan. Meski hujan deras mengguyur venue sejak maghrib hal itu tak membuat semangat peduli pada orangutan luntur. Morning Horny dan Something Wrong berhasil mengajak ratusan Doggies (julukan bagi fans Shaggydog) dan Outsiders untuk bertelanjang dada dan berdansa di tengah hujan.

Sekitar pukul setengah dua belas malam giliran Suicidal Sinatra yang menghujani penonton dengan nuansa rock dengan dentuman bas yang sangat khas. Pohon yang runtuh menimpa sebagian panggung tak membuat band asal Bali ini berhenti membuat ratusan massa melompat-lompat di tengah hujan.

Pukul setengah satu malam ratusan penonton yang sudah basah kuyup makin merapat ke panggung untuk menutup malam bersama Shaggydog. “Tadi Jerinx nitip salam dan meminta maaf nggak bisa datang, lain kali dia janji bakal ngebir bersama kita lagi!” tutur Heru vokalis Shaggydog sesaat setelah mengucapkan selamat ulang tahun kepada para Outsiders kota gudeg.

“Mari memperlakukan orangutan seperti layaknya saudara kita sendiri,” lanjut Heru pada para ratusan orang di depan panggung. Band yang lekat dengan kawasan Sayidan ini kemudian menggebrak dengan lagu-lagu anthemic mereka macam “Kembali Berdansa” dan “Di Sayidan”, tak ketinggalan beberapa lagu dari album baru mereka macam “Ditato” dan “Honey” berhasil membuat penonton yang masih meneduh di tenda meluncur untuk berhujan-hujan ria di depan panggung.

Selain diisi oleh pertunjukan musik amal bagi orangutan, Dare to Care juga menggandeng Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) sebuah lembaga independen yang berkonsentrasi pada penyelamatan orangutan untuk memberi pengetahuan mengenai kondisi orangutan lewat pemutaran film dokumenter. Menurut Hardi Bakdiantoro (pendiri COP) acara musik seperti ini sangat membantu untuk memberitahu keadaan orangutan yang sebenarnya pada anak muda.

“Saat ini sekitar 2.400 dari 12.000 orangutan terbunuh setiap tahunnya, hal ini diperparah lagi karena pemerintah terus mengizinkan pembukaan lahan sawit di Kalimantan yang berarti membabat habis habitat orangutan, ini jelas nggak bisa dibiarin,” jelasnya. Ia juga menambahkan dengan event seperti ini diharapkan anak muda mau peduli terhadap satwanya khususnya orangutan.

Hal senada disampaikan Bandizt (bassist Shaggydog) yang juga bertindak sebagai penanggungjawab acara ini. “Lewat Dare to Care diharapkan perhatian ke orangutan meningkat sebab kondisi orangutan memang benar-benar memprihatinkan, inginnya juga ngebentuk kesadaran kalau kita kaya akan satwa, anak muda penting buat disadarin, kalau yang tua-tua udah susah,” jelas pembetot bas Shaggydog yang sekali seminggu pergi ke PPSJ untuk memberi makan orangutan ini.

Pertunjukan amal dua hari ini kemudian ditutup dengan memberi makan orangutan di PPSJ di hari kedua berlangsungnya penyelenggaraan. “Orangutan harus terus kita jaga, dan stop pembabatan hutan untuk perkebunan kelapa sawit,” pungkas Bandizt sambil memberi makan seekor orangutan.

PUNK ROCK

Punk rock is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Rooted in garage rock and other forms of what is now known as protopunk music, punk rock bands eschewed the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. They created fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY (do it yourself) ethic, with many bands self-producing their recordings and distributing them through informal channels.

By late 1976, bands such as the Ramones, in New York City, and the Sex Pistols and The Clash, in London, were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement. The following year saw punk rock spreading around the world. Punk quickly, though briefly, became a major cultural phenomenon in the United Kingdom. For the most part, punk took root in local scenes that tended to reject association with the mainstream. An associated punk subculture emerged, expressing youthful rebellion and characterized by distinctive styles of clothing and adornment and a variety of anti-authoritarian ideologies.

By the beginning of the 1980s, faster, more aggressive styles such as hardcore and Oi! had become the predominant mode of punk rock. Musicians identifying with or inspired by punk also pursued a broad range of other variations, giving rise to post-punk and the alternative rock movement. By the turn of the century, pop punk had been adopted by the mainstream, with bands such as Green Day and The Offspring bringing the genre widespread popularity.
